In 2019, the Anglican Consultative Council adopted these guidelines in pursuit of the objective of making every Church a safe place for all.
At the Lambeth Conference in 2022, Bishops agreed to take forward a Lambeth Call on Safe Church and recommitted to making the safety of all people in the provinces of the Anglican Communion a priority of their focus. They made this public commitment following a plenary session on Safe Church, which included a presentation from a survivor and interviews with the Archbishops of Canterbury and Cape Town.
This document will therefore, in due course, become policy within the Church of England.
The guidelines discuss:
- Provision of support where there is abuse
- Effective responses
- Adopting and promoting standards
- Assessing suitability for ministry
- Promoting a culture of safety
They also contain in Schedule 1 clear definitions of what constitutes abuse including clear definitions of what would constitute bullying behaviour.
They make clear that the Guidelines apply to both clergy and lay workers.
